- Folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 contribute to the normal metabolism of homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid produced by the body, which is normally converted to methionine, an essential amino acid, component of protein. The production of methionine from homocysteine, dependent of folate, is made by the transfer of a methyl group from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to B12 and then to homocysteine to form methionine. The conversion of homocysteine is also possible by an alternative route with vitamin B6 as a cofactor. A deficiency in folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 may therefore lead to an increase in the concentration of plasma homocysteine.
- Folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 contribute to the psychological functions normal (for example, concentration, learning, memory, reasoning, and stress resistance) and the normal functioning of the immune system. Vitamin B12 contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system.
- Folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 contribute to reduce tiredness. The folic acid intake may be lower in the elderly, for example due to a decreased appetite.
- A vitamin B6 deficiency may occur with chronic alcoholism
