Vitamins and minerals play a vital role in many important body functions and are therefore essential to stay in good health. A varied diet consisting of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, meat and dairy products contains in principle enough vitamins and minerals (chromium, copper, zinc) in order to avoid possible deficiencies. A varied diet, balanced excludes, therefore, the need to take vitamin supplements, even in the case of sports practice intensive. There is no scientific evidence indicating that taking additional vitamins or chromium, copper and zinc, has the slightest positive impact on the sporting performance of very different natures. Individuals who are physically active in the context of improving the fitness and health must therefore first aspire to adopt a healthy and balanced diet.

However, many athletes and elite athletes often follow, whether temporarily or not, a diet low in calories to a decrease in the rate of fats in the body. In most sports, the body weight is indeed a major determinant of performance. Moreover, a typical characteristic of endurance athletes is that, after having followed a regime low calorie, they go on a diet (too) little varied and rich in carbohydrates during periods of training and competition intensive. The possible result is an unbalanced diet as a consequence of a reduced consumption of foods rich in carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy products, meat and fish), that are necessary to ensure an adequate absorption of various vitamins and minerals. A diet that is low in calories and rich in carbohydrates can in fact lead to a risk of a lack of vitamins. Therefore, a supplementation preventive in additional vitamins is recommended in order to avoid a decrease of the capacity of physical performance due to deficiencies in vitamins.
