Fibre which absorbs fats. The association of chitosan with a weight-loss diet increases the effectiveness of the diet. The chitosan contains fiber extracted from the carapace of shrimp and of natural fibres which have the particularity to absorb 4 to 5 times their own weight in grease. The chitosan binds to dietary fats, which are found in the stomach and eliminate them with the stool. This mechanism of the absorption and elimination prevents fats from being absorbed. In combination with a reduced calorie diet, this particular property of chitosan reduces fat stores. Chitosan also has a full place in a cholesterol-lowering diet.

Side effects
The absorption of fat by the chitosan blocks the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids. Supplementation of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E) is recommended 2 hours before taking chitosan. The chitosan can not be used in people allergic to shellfish, or for the woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding.
